The tragic death of Bijender Shah, a hardworking taxi driver in Delhi, has shed light on the sacrifices he made to provide a good education for his five children. Shah, 43, would work long hours, often up to 16 hours a day, driving his taxi through the night to support his family.
On the night of the incident, Shah picked up two passengers who later pushed him out of his car and attempted to steal it. In his brave attempt to save his means of livelihood, Shah got entangled on the underside of the car and was dragged for around a kilometer before his body was dropped on the side of a service road.
A video of the incident, filmed by the occupants of another vehicle, went viral on social media, highlighting the shocking nature of the crime. Police received information about the incident at 11.20pm and Shah was rushed to a hospital where he was declared dead.
Shah’s family and friends described him as the sole breadwinner and praised his dedication to his children’s education. He had been working as a cab driver since 2010 and had put his two sons and three daughters through school and college. His eldest daughter is currently a student at Delhi University and is preparing for civil services examinations.
Despite the tragedy, Shah’s family expressed shock and disappointment that no one on the road attempted to stop the suspects or help Shah. They also shared that the family had recently suffered another loss with the death of Shah’s mother just a month ago.
Late on Wednesday night, two suspects were arrested in connection with the crime, and the car was recovered from them.
